Annunciation and other events

Besides today being the Solemnity of the Annunciation, it is also the day in Olympia, Greece, when the olympic torch is lit by a “high priestess” and the torch relay begins.  If you’ve seen any pictures of the event, they’ve tried to make it as ancient Greek as possible.  Well, there is a certain sense where one could look at Mary “lighting the torch” of salvation with her “Fiat.”  I certainly don’t see the torch-lighting today upstaging the much more essential commemoration of Mary’s Assumption, but I suppose it will in many parts of the not-terribly-Christian world (and allegedly Christian too).  It’s important to think on “things above” and, if we see some “shadow” of this in world events, to recognzine where the real treasure lies.
